Are you interested in Scientology’s controversial history, tales from past members and celebrity information?
Here are my top 10 favorite memoirs and biographies. My deepest respect goes to those who have been brave enough to share their stories and investigate the truth.
Recommended Books Written by Ex-Scientologists:
Hands down, the best book so far I’ve read about growing up as a second-generation Scientologist, written by the current leader’s niece.
- Beyond Belief: My Secred Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape by Jenna Miscavige Hill
These tell-all memoirs spill the beans! If you’re interested in the celebrity aspect of Scientology, check out these titles:
- A Billion Years: My Escape From a Life in the Highest Ranks of Scientology (2022) by Mike Rinder
- Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology (2015) by Leah Remini
- Ruthless: My Son David Miscavige, and Me (2016) by Ron Miscavige
If you want to know what it’s like to be in the thick of the abuse and cognitive dissonance, these two self-published titles will get you there!
- My Billion Year Contract: Memoir of a Former Scientologist (2009) by Nancy Many
- Scientology: Abuse at the Top (2010) by Amy Scobee
Written by biographers/journalists:
These two are very in-depth biographies of L. Ron. Hubbard, the early days of Scientology and the David Miscavige (current Scientology leader) takeover.
- Bare-Faced Messiah: The True Story of L. Ron Hubbard (1987) by Russell Miller
- A Piece of Blue Sky: Scientology, Dianetics and L. Ron Hubbard (1990) by Jon Atak
Two more beefy documentary style books. These are much newer than the first mentioned. If you get through these, you will know everything (almost)!
- The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology Tried to Destroy Paulette Cooper by Tony Ortega
- Basically if it wasn’t for her, I’d never be speaking out.
- Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood and the Prison of Belief
- The movie version (HBO Special) is also available on Amazon to rent
